Love these. What about Buster? http://www.smirk.com/jim/bkpics/bk-navigator.jpg

    Note the missing index finger.

I feel the wordlessness of the silent film medium kind of negates, to some extent, gender, by separating (lagging) the bodies from the words. Abandoned in film but at the core of dance, not just a negation of gender but a negation of age (Eiko & Koma brings me to tears! http://vimeo.com/10217110) . In poetry as well? Bodyless words, wordless bodies?

Yes, Buster is divine! My absolute favorite, tho, is Conrad Veigt, who plays Cesar the Somnabulist in The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari!

The lag, as you call it, in silent films, is so beautiful. Swarming with lacunae.
